The stories belong to the people who tell them. Nothing on this site changes that.
Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property, commonly shortened to ICIP, covers the rights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples hold in their own heritage: their stories, languages, knowledge, songs, dances, designs, ceremonies, ancestral remains, and the records made of any of these.
Australian copyright law protects the recording, not the story. It grants rights to whoever holds the camera rather than to the person whose knowledge is being filmed, and it recognises individual authors rather than communities. That gap is why this notice exists.
Every speaker retains all rights in their story, their knowledge, their language, and their cultural expression. Recording a session transfers nothing.
We record only when the speaker agrees, we tell the room before we start, and we publish only what the speaker has approved. A speaker may ask us to withdraw a recording at any later time, for any reason, and we will do it.
Speakers, communities, and Country are named. Where a story belongs to a community rather than to an individual, we name the community.
Some knowledge is not for public telling, and only its custodians can say which. Where a speaker marks material as restricted, it is not recorded, not transcribed, and not published.
Pages carrying images, voices, or names of people who have died display a cultural advice notice. Where a family or community asks that a name or image be withdrawn following a death, we act on the request.
Nothing recorded at these sessions is sold, licensed, or used to raise money. The series charges no admission and takes no revenue of any kind.
The artwork on the session flyers and on the email invitations is by Aunty Denise Proud and remains her property. It appears with her permission and may not be reproduced elsewhere without it. A detail of that work appears in the footer of this site.

Books and films on the reading and viewing lists are the property of their authors, directors, and publishers. The lists describe those works and point to where they may be bought, borrowed, or streamed legitimately. We link nothing that appears to be published without the rights holder's authority.
If any material on this site misrepresents a story, uses something that should not have been used, or should be withdrawn, tell us and we will act. Write through the contact form, or speak to Rosalie or Linda at any session. We would rather take something down and discuss it than leave it up while we argue.
